Superintendent Jeffrey Katz

Colonel Jeffrey S. Katz was appointed Superintendent of the Virginia State Police by Governor Abigail Spanberger in January 2026 and began serving in that role at the start of the Governor’s term.

Colonel Katz brings more than three decades of public safety leadership experience across municipal, county, state, federal, and academic environments. Most recently, he served as a faculty member at the FBI Academy, where he helped prepare senior law enforcement executives for agency leadership through graduate-level instruction in leadership, organizational psychology, and executive decision-making. His work focused on strengthening organizational alignment, ethical leadership, and long-term institutional resilience.

Previously, Colonel Katz served as Chief of Police for the Chesterfield County Police Department from 2018 to 2024, leading one of Virginia’s largest and most complex law enforcement organizations. Earlier in his career, he held a variety of supervisory and executive roles in Florida law enforcement, beginning his career in 1989 and ultimately serving as Chief of Police in Boynton Beach.

Colonel Katz holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Saint Leo University and a master’s degree in business leadership from Nova Southeastern University. He completed doctoral-level coursework in organizational psychology and is a graduate of the FBI National Academy, the Southern Police Institute Command Officer Development Course, and executive leadership programs at Harvard University and the University of Notre Dame.

As Superintendent, Colonel Katz is committed to strengthening public trust, supporting the men and women of the Virginia State Police, and ensuring the agency remains a modern, professional, and mission-focused organization in service to the Commonwealth.
