This check comes on the heels of a previous donation of $5,230, and is the culmination of the Association’s motto; “To Be Mutually Helpful To One Another.” The money was raised in a golf tournament in September, coordinated by members of the organization. “It has been beyond heartwarming to see the way the community has rallied around these deputies and their families in the shadow the tragic events of March 13th,” said VSPA President E.J. Kelly. “With coordination from retired members, including Delegate Bill Carrico, Senior Special Agent Roy Kyle, and Master Trooper Mark Sutherland, these families will hopefully feel a little lighter burden as they grieve their loss and rebuild their lives. It takes a special kind of person to venture out behind a badge every day, risking life and limb for the safety of others, and it is our honor and privilege to give something back to these families.” “The deaths of Cameron Neil Justus and William Ezra Stiltner, and the injuries inflicted upon Shane Charles and Eric Rasnake, were felt throughout the state, and support for these families has come from throughout Southwest Virginia and around the Commonwealth.”
The success of this years’ golf tournament fundraising event is largely due to our corporate partners K-VA-T Food Stores, Inc. and Alpha Natural Resources both from Abingdon, Virginia. Their willingness to give back to the community through partnering with the Virginia State Police Association on this event is greatly appreciated.
